When is a load oversized?

In Bulgaria and the EU the standard limits for a truck are 2.55 m width, 4 m height, 16.5 m length for a tractor and semi-trailer and 40 tonnes gross weight (44 t in combined transport). Anything beyond – machinery, steel structures, tanks, transformers, wind-turbine components, construction and agricultural equipment – is an oversized or heavy load and needs a route permit and often an escort.

How we organise an oversized transport

1. Cargo data – exact dimensions, weight, centre of gravity, lashing points and photos or a drawing. From these we choose the trailer: lowbed, semi-lowbed, extendable or modular for the heaviest loads.
2. Route and permits – we check bridges, tunnels, height and weight restrictions along the whole route and obtain permits in every country on the way. Lead times range from a few days to 2–3 weeks for the heaviest categories.
3. Escort and movement – above certain dimensions the vehicle moves only with escort cars, in permitted hours (often at night) and outside weekends in some countries.
4. Loading and securing – by crane or under its own power, secured with chains and straps to EN 12195, checked before departure.
